Land Bank Information
The Athens County Land Bank was created in 2018 by the County Commissioners and the County Treasurer. The Land Bank’s goal is to take control of blighted and abandoned properties, reduce the harm they cause through either demolition or rehabilitation and ultimately to return these properties to productive use by private entities. This outcome typically generates needed property tax revenue for schools, villages and townships in the process.
The Land Bank acquires most of its inventory through tax foreclosures on tax-delinquent properties. They also accept property donations of both tax-delinquent and tax-compliant properties. Properties in their inventory are sold to the general public providing that purchasers meet certain basic criteria.
The Land Bank Board of Trustees is comprised of 5 elected officials. Two County Commissioners, The County Treasurer, The Mayor of the City of Athens and one Township Trustee. The Board typically meets monthly on the third Wednesday at 11am.
